Is CoolSculpting Right for You?

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, fat-reduction procedure meant for men and women who have a bit of “pinchable” fat that will not disappear no matter how much they exercise and adjust their diet. It targets the most difficult areas on your body to supplement results achieved through a healthy lifestyle.

The procedure is not meant to replace a weight loss plan—CoolSculpting may not be right for you if you are looking to lose 20 or 30 pounds. Body contouring is most effective on people within a normal BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, unlike liposuction or a tummy tuck that targets much larger areas of adipose (fat) tissue.

Skin laxity is also important. CoolSculpting should be performed on patients with relatively tight or toned skin to prevent the appearance of loose skin after fat loss.

Finally, you should speak with your doctor or treatment provider at Sona to discuss medical history and conditions that may affect treatment. CoolSculpting is a safe procedure, but its cold temperature can affect the body, especially in people who have Raynaud’s Disease.

What is CoolSculpting?

The science behind CoolSculpting was discovered in the 1970s after an infant’s case of reported popsicle panniculitis—a type of inflammation in the cheek caused by sucking on cold objects, such as popsicles. Later instances led researchers to find that sucking on a cold object could destroy fat cells in the cheek without damaging the skin or deeper tissue.

Enter cryolipolysis—a low-pain, fat-reduction method that uses an applicator set at a very cold temperature. CoolSculpting, a specific brand of cryolipolysis, uses a vacuum applicator with a thin barrier to protect the skin from freezing temperatures. The machine then alternates the temperature automatically as the treatment provider moves the applicator along the area. The process can take an hour to several hours depending on how many areas are treated.

At Sona, we use CoolSculpting in Dallas to target these more difficult areas—approved by the FDA—for eliminating fat:

  • Chin and submental area
  • Upper arms
  • Back/bra strap region
  • Abdomen

  • Banana roll (under the buttocks)

Once you have your Dallas CoolSculpting consultation, it is just three convenient steps to freeze your fat away:

  • Check-in—Arrive at the front desk on the day of your appointment. Your provider will bring you to the treatment area where you will be given special garments to wear during the procedure.
  • Treatment—Your provider will begin treatment by applying the CoolSculpting device to the targeted area of fat. The procedure will be very cold at first, but the area will start to numb between 5 and 10 minutes of treatment. At this time, you can sit back and relax, read a book, or check your emails.
  • Post-treatment—A treatment can take up to 45 minutes or several hours, depending on how many areas you’re covering (each area takes about 45–60 minutes). Once treatment is finished, your nurse will massage the area(s) for one or two minutes. This step has been shown in studies to increase fat reduction 68% more than in unmassaged areas.

After treatment, you are ready to resume normal activities. Most people return for two or more rounds of treatment for the best results.

How Long is CoolSculpting Recovery Time?

There is no necessary downtime after receiving a CoolSculpting treatment. You can continue your normal activities that same day, including work, exercise, or going out with friends.

Despite no downtime, some minor side effects may take several hours to a few weeks to subside, including:

  • Redness
  • Tingling or soreness
  • Numbness
  • Bruising
  • Swelling

The risk of complications is very low with CoolSculpting. If you are afraid of major surgical procedures, such as liposuction, or possible infections, scarring, and anesthesia complications, then CoolSculpting is a great option to reduce unwanted fat.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect with CoolSculpting?

Not everyone will achieve the same results with CoolSculpting, as expectations may be based on the hope of weight loss rather than the reduction of fat cells in a specific area. Some patients may also require multiple treatments for optimal results. Fortunately, CoolSculpting is evidenced to work and give lasting results.

Results will generally last as long as you maintain a healthy diet and fitness regime. This is because the remaining fat cells in the area can still expand even though fat cells have already been destroyed. Fat cell loss is permanent, but it is possible to gain the weight back in these areas if you do not keep up with a healthy lifestyle.

In a study of 518 patients who received a cryolipolysis treatment, 86% of patients reported improvement and 73% were satisfied. Six patients were dissatisfied, but four of those patients changed their opinion after a second treatment. Overall, you should expect to lose an average of up to 25% of the fat in a given area.

Talk to your Sona provider about your desired results, so they make recommendations and help you achieve your goals.
