Allergies & Patch Testing
Do you have allergies?
The symptoms of allergies can range from mildly irritating to life threatening—that’s why it’s important to have an idea of where your allergies land on that spectrum. Once an allergy is diagnosed, our specialists can recommend strategies for treating the symptoms. Book an appointment today to find out how we can help make living with allergies a little easier.
What causes allergies?
While many allergies will present themselves early on, it’s possible for adults to develop allergies later in life. Your immune system mistakenly identifies a substance as foreign and you experience symptoms like dry, itchy eyes, a runny nose, a scratchy throat or a chronic rash (known as contact dermatitis).
How are allergies diagnosed?
If you experience a chronic rash, an allergen may be to blame. Patch testing can help confirm your suspicions and give you the opportunity to pursue treatment to reduce symptoms.
What to expect during patch testing
Patch tests do not use needles. Instead, allergens are applied to patches, which are then placed on your skin. During a patch test, your skin may be exposed to 80 to 100 extracts of substances that can cause contact dermatitis. You wear the patches on your arm or back for 48 hours. During this time, and for five days after the patches are removed, you should avoid bathing and activities that cause heavy sweating. The patches are removed when you return to your doctor’s office. Irritated skin at the patch site may indicate an allergy.

How are allergies treated?
Once identified with patch testing, allergies can be treated by avoiding the offending allergen and taking medications that reduce uncomfortable symptoms.
- Allergen avoidance
Why should you get patch testing?
While many allergies are accompanied by obvious symptoms, there are some allergies that aren’t as easily detected. A patch test can help identify an allergic reaction that takes several days to develop. Contact dermatitis can be easily prevented, but only if you know what is causing it. Allergic reaction-causing substances can include latex, medications, fragrances, preservatives, hair dyes, metals and resins.
